If you love running as much as I do, then you know better than anyone else just how important your choice of footwear is as you work out. It has the potential to either make your experience fulfilling or absolutely dreadful. It is therefore super important to ensure that you get the very best there is in the market to ensure that you are comfortable and your feet are protected as you power walk, jog or sprint your way to fitness. Two of the best running shoe models in the market are the Brooks Ghost 9 and Saucony Ride 9. Below is a comparison of these two industry bigwigs based on some of the most important features of running shoes. The information should help you whether you are a fitness rookie or a guru to make the right choice on your next running companion

1. Aesthetic appeal; which looks better?

Brooks Ghost 9

The Ghost 9 line is available in aesthetic varieties for men, women and a neutral palate for both. This means that for the same shoe design, you have a whole lot of variety to work with. The women’s line features a grey with blue, red, purple or green combo whereas pairs for men include an all blue choice, black and green and the same grey and red combo as that for women. All this is set on a white sole with shoe laces matching the general color scheme of the particular pair. In my opinion, this unique use of color makes it the best choice if you are looking for a pair to turn heads.

Saucony Ride 9

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and I would be lying if I said that the Saucony Ride 9 stood out to me in terms of aesthetic appeal. It is undeniably unique with the blue and orange blend as well as the purple, pink, full orange and green but the arrangement of colors itself is what makes the difference. However, as I said this is purely a matter of opinion and should not in any way discourage you from going for what you think is best.

2. Ergonomics and comfort: which feels better?

Brooks Ghost 9

The shoes feature the unique Biomogo DNA midsole cushioning design which ensures full support of all your foot arches as your walk or run. It also has a crash pad running the entire length of the sole for shock absorption whether you are jogging on a treadmill or you are running through a rocky mountain. This ensures that your feet are protected from strenuous injury and you as the runner get to enjoy your time out without any form of discomfort.

Saucony Ride 9

The heel is cupped and padded with special foam material for absorption of shock and for comfort during running. The entire sole is placed on a three layer tri-flex layout for extra support, cushioning and shock absorption designed to ensure smooth running while you exercise; pun intended.

3. Air circulation; which pair offers the best breathability?

Brooks Ghost 9

The top part of the shoe is fitted with an intricate meshwork of material that provides the perfect blend of aesthetics, breathability and flexibility. In this particular section of the comparison, it is the breathability that sticks out the most. The mesh allows air in and out of the shoe for proper circulation. According to Dr. Debra Sullivan at Heathline.com, improper circulation of air within shoes provides the perfect environment for fungal growth leading to infections especially between the toes including tenia pedis and athletes foot. Ghost 9 prevents this with the mesh feature that allows flow of air in and out. This way, you don’t have to worry about smelly feet or infections as a result of moisture buildup.

Saucony Ride 9

The upper part has a diamond pattern mesh with an inner cloth lining. This provides an avenue through which air can move in and out of the shoe. However, this system is significantly less effective than the engineered mesh on the Brooks Ghost 9 making the Saucony Ride 9 the weaker of the two options when it comes to breathability.

4. Materials used and the implications

Brooks Ghost 9

The upper section is made out of engineered mesh which as earlier stated is great for air circulation. It also makes it a lot more flexible for comfort and maneuverability as you run. The insole is made out of synthetic foam material for cushioning against hard impact as you run. Finally, the outer sole is made out of rubber giving it the extra spring that makes running shoes so important. Basically, every single part of this pair of shoes is meant to make your life outdoors a whole lot easier.

Saucony Ride 9

The upper part of each shoe is made out of high quality fiber cloth material for breathability. The lower part on the other hand is made from a blend of two types of rubber; carbon rubber and blown rubber. This offers support and propulsion on much larger scale than the Brooks Ghost 9.

5. Shoe design and dimensions and the implications

Brooks Ghost 9

According to BBC, a shoe’s design and dimensions have the power to either protect your feet from injury or to cause the injury itself while you exercise. Brooks Ghost 9 have a protective design with the 12 mm heel drop on a basic platform design. This offers the wearer maximum support and balance as they run, jog or walk. The heel drop is a great advantage but to the flat footed folks, it can prove to be a little problematic. For this reason, the Brooks Ghost 9 might not have the best design of these two amazing pairs.

The Brooks Ghost 9 running shoe has been one of the most popular of their line of Ghost running shoes. We dissect what's the difference: Brooks Ghost 9 vs Saucony Ride 9

Saucony Ride 9

Unlike the Brooks Ghost 9, the Saucony Ride 9 has a gentler heel drop measuring 8 mm. This makes it a lot friendlier for use by both flat footed runners and those with normal foot arches. The effectiveness of this design is supported by research results on Your Comfy Feet. We also detail what "flat feet" are in this article.  In addition to this design, the middle part of the outer sole has a slightly elevated design as a result of dense packing of the blown rubber.

6. Weight; who is the heaviest of them all?

Brooks Ghost 9

It weighs a mere 10.60 oz. making it one of the lightest models in the market. This way, you get to enjoy all the comfort, support and coverage without feeling like you are carrying around too much extra weight.

Saucony Ride 9

In this case, the Saucony Ride 9 takes the cake weighing in at 9.30 oz. This gives you as the wearer a more comfortable and lightweight experience allowing you as much freedom and flexibility as you require to workout to your heart’s content.

7. Water resistance; which pair can handle a little water play?

Brooks Ghost 9

Unfortunately, the engineered mesh leaves the shoe vulnerable to water infiltration in spite of its usefulness in air circulation. However, the lower parts where rubber is the dominant material are completely waterproof. This means that you can run through very shallow puddles without soaking through but you should steer clear of larger and deep puddles and water pools in your running path.

Saucony Ride 9

This pair also let me down in terms of eater resistance where the upper part does both good and harm. If water resistance is a feature you simply cannot bear to compromise on, below is the link to a video on simple tips that will allow you to turn ordinary running shoes into water resistant pairs.

8. Other unique features

Brooks Ghost 9

The toe box is wider than that of ordinary running shows allowing more toe maneuverability within the shoe. This way, you eliminate chances of blistering and other forms of friction injury as a result of the continuous close contact.

Saucony Ride 9

The have reflectors which come in handy for joggers and runners who prefer to do their workouts when it is dark. They also have RunDry moisture absorbing wicks to keep the shoe and your feet dry.

9. Cost; which is the more affordable option?

Brooks Ghost 9

Depending on when, where and how many pairs you buy, the Brooks Ghost 9 prices range below $150. This is not cheap but considering all you stand to gain in terms of quality, I would say that it is a great deal.

Saucony Ride 9

The pair falls below the Brooks Ghost 9 price range making it less expensive than the Brooks Ghost 9 and therefore better the option of the two in terms of price.

Verdict:

After all is said and done, there is no denying the fact that the two pairs are absolutely amazing in their own way. The choice of which is better than the other therefore boils down to your opinion and preferences as the wearer. For me, aesthetics, comfort and breathability are the most important features and Brooks Ghost 9 is therefore obviously the best choice for me. To find the best pair for you, just figure out what it is that matters to you and make the choice based on your priorities.

Amazon has a great selection of both, but I also recommend checking out BrooksRunning.com as they routinely have sales especially around Thanksgiving. Oh try Road Runner Sports as they have some pretty good deals too.
